ABIM Recertification
ACP supports certification for internists and believes that maintenance of certification (also known as recertification) should be simple, cost-effective, relevant, and should not duplicate existing processes. In a relationship that has evolved over time, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), which is responsible for the certification and maintenance of certification of physicians in internal medicine, and ACP have been working together to refine the process. The goal of this collaboration and ongoing discussions includes optimizing the educational value and attractiveness of the process, reducing redundancy, and creating standards that are publicly credible.
Options to Consider
ABIM grants credit for an attractive option for ACP's Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP®) to fulfill part of the requirement for maintenance of certification. In addition, a modified ABIM framework was instituted in January 2006, motivated by a desire to increase flexibility, reduce redundancy, emphasize assessment of performance in practice, and simplify the process for physicians recertifying in both internal medicine and one or more of its subspecialties.
