Federal Trade Commission and Patient ID Theft Prevention

The Federal Trade Commission has issued its “Red Flags” regulations addressing medical identity theft’s increasingly possible dangers. The regulations also list the identifying characteristics of – and ways to prevent -- medical identity theft. Medical identity theft occurs when a person uses someone else’s personal health information (insurance information, Social Security number, health care file, medical records) without the individual’s knowledge or consent, in order to obtain medical services and/or goods, or to submit false claims for medical services. Medical identity theft can happen on small and large scales, risking practice revenues, patients’ personal and financial data, insurer resources, and government resources.
