ACP and ASIM: The Convergence of Complementary Paths

From ASIM's founding in 1956 through 1998, the American Society of Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians have pursued complementary and eventually converging paths in their efforts to advance the specialty of internal medicine.

While the organizations' core missions remained distinct, cooperation between the ACP and ASIM and increasing overlap in their spheres of activity led the two organizations to unite on a number of projects and positions. In 1998 the ACP and ASIM finally merged into one strong voice for internal medicine.

This exhibit was originally developed for display at the 1999 Annual Session, the first Annual Session after the merger. It chronicles the converging paths that brought two outstanding organizations together from different founding missions.
